Armstrong says children need exercise
NEW YORK - Lance Armstrong says his three children don‘t waste their time playing video games: He makes sure they get out and get physical. Armstrong, who has retired from cycling, has a son and twin daughters, all under the age of 10. He made the comments in a session on combating chronic diseases at the annual conference that brings together world leaders, business moguls, celebrities and other activists to brainstorm solutions to global problems. He is now training for his first New York City Marathon on Nov. 5.

Cycling | Most of Lance-era Discovery team out By The Associated Press PARIS — The Discovery Channel team is parting with several riders who helped Lance Armstrong win one or more of his seven straight Tour de France titles. George Hincapie of the United States, long considered Armstrong's key teammate, is staying with the squad. Among the 11 cyclists leaving are: two-time Giro d'Italia champion Paolo Savoldelli of Italy, climber Jose Azevedo of Portugal, Manuel Beltran of Spain, Viatcheslav Ekimov of Russia and Benoit Joachim of Luxembourg.

New cycling law rides across Ohio
Bikers will n longer be prevented from using public ro dways when House Bill 289, which defines and regulates bicycling laws in Ohio, became effective Thursday and will, in many cases, override local regulations. Among the bill's highlights is a provision that cyclists will no longer be prevented by local ordinance or law from using any public roadway, even if an alternative bikeway is available, said Cal Kirchick, vice president of ClevelandBikes and trustee of the Ohio Bicycle Federation.

American women unbeaten at worlds
Tina Thompson scored 19 points, and Candace Parker added 17 as the United States defeated Russia 90-80 on Thursday to finish the first round of the women's world basketball championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a perfect record. The Americans (3-0), the two-time defending champions, handed Russia (2-1) its first loss of the tournament in the matchup of the top two teams from Group C. Minnesota Lynx rookie Seimone Augustus went scoreless in six minutes. The top three teams from each four-country group advanced to the second round.

Cycling: Lance's New Dope, and More
Oh deerie-deer, Lance is back on the hot seat. An article in the New York Times on Tuesday reports that two former U.S. Postal teammates of Lance, Frankie Andreu and another unidentified rider, have admitted to using EPO during the 1999 racing season. The article does note that neither of the two riders ever saw Lance use any drugs, but the implication, and the guilt by association, are readily apparent. Needless to say, Lance was not pleased.

The first time Betsy Andreu heard her husband say that he had used a drug to enhance his performance as a professional cyclist, they were engaged and she threatened to call off their wedding. Ten years and three children later, Frankie Andreu repeated his confession in their kitchen, and in front of a reporter. This time, his wife didn't want to say what she was thinking out loud. Instead, she wrote a note and placed it on his pillow. "It said: 'I'm prouder of you than I've ever been before, and I respect you more than I ever have,' " she said by phone Wednesday afternoon from their home in Dearborn, Mich.
